Völva is the name of a mystic lady who was said to have lived in Reyðarfjörður. On the road above Reyðarfjörður is her ancient burial place. She said that when she died, if her bones were left undisturbed she would protect the fjord from all enemies. In the history of Reyðarfjörður this vow has been tested twice, the first in 1627 when bad weather prevented pirates from entering the bay, and the second during WW2 when a German pilot lost control when flying over Reyðarfjörður and crash landed in the mountains. Visitors to the burial place now are asked to leave the site alone.
