Vopnafjordur is a large town in the north east of Iceland. It sits on the edge of a scenic fjord running out to the ocean, and occupies a mountainside position. A harbour exists here, which is still used by the fishing fleet. The town has a swimming pool, folk museum, plenty of shops, eateries and accommodation. It makes a good base for exploring the region. The tourist office has a small local history exhibition, and plenty of information on the surrounding area’s attractions. Vopnafjordur also has an airport with links to Reykjavik.
