The Tjornes peninsula is rich in fossils along its cliffs. These are known as the Ytrirunga Fossils, and exist in a series of layers dating back two million years. These are the remains of shell creatures which lived in the waters here when they were much warmer. A museum exists just along Route 85 at Hallbjarnarstadir farm, which uncovers the history of the cliffs and the different fossils found here. It is open from June to August.
